Dowloading Google Docs and Embedding your Own Document!

Some of you are new to using google docs in blogs (I know I JUST learned how to embed my files, so I am fairly new myself), so I thought I send you to a GREAT tutorial that a friend of mine posted on her blog:  2ndin1st

As you can see, you just simply have to click on the “box-in-a-box!”  This will take you to the google docs page where you can then download my file!

If you have your own blog and you would like to learn how to embed a document (this means that people will see the picture of your document on your blog!!!), here are the steps:
  •  Upload your document onto google docs.
  • Click on your document name to open it (you will see your actual document and what it looks like)
  • To the right, you will see an option with a url to embed into a webpage or a blog.  COPY this URL
  • Open your blog and create a new post
  • Type any instructions you would like to type in your message.
  • UNDERNEATH where you type your message, there will be an option called “Post Options.”  Click on this!

  • Change the Edit HTML line breaks by selecting the following:
    Use <br /> tags
  • Change compose setting to “interpret Typed HTML”
  • In your message, paste the url from your document where you want it to appearIMPORTANTyou might need to skip a line after your message and after your url to have your url be its own “paragraph.”  This made a difference the first time I attempted to embed a document!
  • Click “Preview” and you should see you document appear in your blog!
Let me know in the comments if you are still having trouble downloading my documents or if you were successful in getting your document to show up in your own blog!!!

  1. Or even easier, just click the "edit html" tab next to the "compose" tab and paste it right there. Then click "compose" to go back to your normal view.

  2. Google Docs never even shows my document. I just see a link that says Download. It doesn't show any html on the side either. It just has a link there to email it. It also just shows a white rectangle instead of the Adobe Acrobat pdf symbol in my list of documents when I upload it. I have never felt more frustrated or less intelligent in my entire life. Do you have any idea what's wrong?

  5. Those of you having trouble getting the sidebar to show up...I don't know why this works, but it does:
click open your document once, then close that window and click open your document a second time. This time you should have the url sidebar.

Try it and let me know if it works or not!!!

  9. I’m not getting it to work. I never see the url. Do you have to make the pdf into a google docs copy? I uploaded my file as a pdf, but when I made it into a google docs copy it messed it up. I can’t find an embedded url anywhere... And I don’t have those post options. I only have reader comments and date/time. Any ideas how to help me?

  10. Janae,
I am not sure what is going wrong for you. You have to upload your document onto google docs FIRST. Then you have to find (on Google Docs) your url to embed into a blog. After that, then you can go to a new posting on your blog and find the other options that I mentioned in my posting. It is in your posting section. When you are ready for your document to show up, THAT is where you paste the url that you copied from google docs.
I hope that helps. I am new to all of this as well, so I am not sure of your specific problems. Let me know if that helps! I will try to troubleshoot with you!

  11. I was not successful in getting my document to show up either. The only link I was able to find was one meant for pasting in an email. It didn't give me the option of a link for embedding in a blog. Any ideas?

  12. I am having trouble with mine. I pasted the code & changed the settings as you noted, but I don't get the whole page show up with the little icons at the top. Mine ends up in a little box about 2"x3".
Is there something I need to change?

  13. Hmmm...not sure what is happening? I am soooo sorry that I am not much more help than that. I have just figured it out to work for me. I know that doesn't help you out much.

  14. If your settings are private, you just click on the share button. Then click on publish to web. I am having the same problem with the small box though and cannot figure out how to fix it.
